Johnny Paycheck (his songs performed by Neko Case, Jeff Tweedy and Robbie Fulks)

I don’t know anything about Johnny Paycheck. Besides the fact that he was an outlaw country singer and the man who made “Take This Job And Shove It” a hit. Frankly I don’t have time to delve into his past releases, history, or the pychosis of Johnny Paycheck but fortunately Robbie Fulks has done it for me with his stellar tribut record. Instead of letting 12 artists do a song and send it in for inclusion on the tribute Robbie put together a killer band and had all of the artists come to him and perform with the house band. This gives the album a cohesiveness lacking in many tributes.

The stars of Touch My Heart a tribute to Johnny Paycheck are Neko Case, Jim Lauderdale, Dave Alvin, and Jeff Tweedy and from the old school George Jones, Johnny Bush and Buck Owens. I’ve included links to 5 songs from this 2004 Sugarhill release but you’ll really need to buy this one to appreciate it fully.
