And I can fill most of it. He wrote wondering if I’d heard of The Coalmen or Bob Delevante, well I batted .500 on that quiz as I am a fan of Bob Delvante’s former band The Delevante’s. The Coalmen on the other hand were new to me so on John’s reccomendation I checked ‘em out and they fit in just fine. This Nashville band was joined in the studio by Duane Jarvis, Carter Wood, and Joy Lynn White. This post all comes full circle as Bob Delevante produced this record.

I never though of The Delevantes as country, I wouldn’t have even pegged them as alt-country but by the time of their 1997 release Postcards From Along The Way that’s the corner they were painted into. Heck they were from NJ so I guess I heard their jangly influences more than their country ones. I always just thought of them as songwriters who crafted perfect layered pop. Here’s a couple from their 1995 debut Long About That Time and the aformentioned Postcards:

A great post as usual. You are by far my favorite music blog since we seem to have very similar tastes. Two more groups I’ve never heard of but loved.
Here’s a reader request for you: Ralston Bowles? His website is ralstonbowles.com, which has 1 song I love (Everybody Wants Something from Me But You) and 1 demo which is pretty good. The site has been promising more demos/songs for months without delivering.
If you can find any more songs from him that would be great.
BTW, if you haven’t already checked out the music magazine Paste, you really need to. Mostly the type of music you feature, great CD compilations with each issue and a website with lots of free MP3s. (You may have mentioned the site already. Some blog did, but I forget who since I had already bookmarked it.)

Thanks for The Coalmen and Delevantes post. I have The Coalmen album, but I do not have The Delevantes’s album, so it was great hearing some of their music.
Keep up the great posts,
John (from Milw)
