Stereogum got off the Britney bandwagon and posted this interesting tidbit about a week ago (read it first so you know what I’m talking about). Matador will lose the cooler than though contest every time and they probably know it. Who’s the coolest indie label? Really anybody but them, they’re as entrenched in the status quo as Sony or Warner. For them to pose as interesting, shocking or diverse is a joke.
One answer to my rhetorical question of who is the coolest is Ropeadope Records. I mean what label has music by such diverse artists (Critters Bugging, Charlie Hunter, Tin Hat Trio, Dirty Dozen Brass Band and The Spanish Harlem Orchestra) and appears to have no interest in making safe musical choices. Their latest announcement is the release on June 16th of the John Medeski produced Can You Feel It? by The Campbell Brothers. Today they emailed a link to one song off this funked-out, steel string church music. Check it out below and then email Matador and tell them to get off their high horse.
