At the Slaid Cleaves/Hayes Carll/Ray Wylie Hubbard show last night Slaid told a great Russell Crowe story. Apparently sometime last year Russell Crowe was in Canada at the same time that Slaid was touring the great white north. Russell came to the show and was hanging out after and took Slaid aside to say that he’d been in bands and knew how hard the life could be and that Slaid shouldn’t refuse what he was about to do. A minute later he stuffed a wad of bills into Slaid’s front shirt pocket and told him to enjoy the next couple of days. Doesn’t that just warm your heart.
This Texas Troubador show was great (it’s in Cleveland tonight). All three artists held up under the glaring light. It’d be difficult not to compare and contrast the three but they each really brought their own thing to the table.
Hayes brought his youthfull but downspirited enthusiasm, Slaid his wonderful tenor voice (and simple moving songs) and Ray brought his wisdom and his almost mystical/philosophical songs and stories. Great show! Here’s a couple of songs from each (couldn’t find my Ray Wylie records – sorry!). Buy their records you can’t go wrong!
