Since my Jolene post was somewhat of a success here’s the next song theme post. This is the start of what I expect will be a complete list of crush songs. We’ll make it a contest for kicks. Winner get’s a free cd. 3 points if “crush” is in the title. 2 point if “crush” appears in the song (no “orange crush” songs please just romantic crush songs). 1 point if it’s somewhat related to the theme but the word “crush” doesn’t appear (like Hello Saferide’s “High School Stalker”). This last one will be up to my discretion.
I’m winning 7 to nothing….get cracking. Leave your “crush” songs in the comments – links to the mp3′s are much appreciated.
Jason has catapulted into second place with his suggestion of Je T’aime (moi non plus) by Serge Gainbourg here performed by Donna Summer (courtesy of Dr Drak’s eclectic french blog)
**Update**
I don’t need much of an excuse to put a song up by The Eels. That it fits perfectly with the theme is a bonus. “Jeannie’s Diary” is about one man’s hope to be on just one page of a girls diary. Also Sebadoh’s “Willing To Wait”. Thanks to Trill 42 who has rocketed into first place.
**Update**
Howard from Spamnet, Last Sound of Summer and Lonesome Music came through at the last minute with the Teenage Fanclub version of Kylie’s Got A Crush On Us. Not enough to win but darn impressive. The winner of the contest is Trill 42 for the sheer number of recommendions and for sending links to The Eels and Sebadoh.
You may have to fill in the song title and .mp3
Ally Kerr – Someone’s Got A Crush On Me
Corey Branan – Crush
Hello Saferide – Highschool Stalker
Donna Summer – Je T’aime (moi non plus)
The Eels – Jeannie’s Diary
Sebadoh – Willing To Wait
Teenage Fanclub – Kylie’s Got A Crush On Us
so, no orange crush?
and no crush with eyeliner too?
that’s right – nothing esoteric just old fashioned yearning desire will do. here’s a hint try the soundtruck to the movie the crush or maybe the crush 2?!!
“Je T’Aime…Moi Non Plus” by Serge Gainsbourg. If this isn’t a crush song, I do not know what is … especially with all of the moaning at the end of the song.
OMD, “Crush,” Crush. Prince, “Lemon Crush,” from the Batman soundtrack. Dave Matthews Band, “Crush,” on Before These Crowded Streets. Garbage, “#1 Crush,” Romeo + Juliet soundtrack. Smashing Pumpkins, “Crush,” Gish. Our friends at Google tell us that Mandy Moore, Gavin DeGraw, Jennifer Paige, and Jimmy Eat World also have songs titled “Crush.” Bon Jovi has an album named Crush, but I’ll not take the time to see if any of the lyrics are thematically relevant. Instead, I’ll go listen to that OMD cassette and enjoy the sound of the rain during their “Crush.”
Can I get three points?
1-2 Crush On You-The Clash
AND!
Infatuation-Rod Stewart
Do I need to mail them to you?
yeah please mail them to me and I can host em and put `em up. only decent songs…did I say that? you know what I mean…
Grant I’ll give three but Neil has at least 8 with OMd and Garbage (and maybe Smashing Pumpkins I don’t know that song)
btw my email for mp3′s is cbonnell@gmail.com
i’ve got a cover of jennifer paige’s “crush” performed by the dismemberment plan…i don’t know if that counts though. everything else i thought of so far has already been mentioned, but ill keep looking…
Aw, I think Hugo’s mention of Crush With Eyeliner should count! I think the lyrics convey plenty of yearning and desire: “I am smitten… I’m in like… I’m infatuated… What can I make myself be?/To make her mine?”
Not giving Neil serious competition but I’ll mention these anyway:
Bruce Springsteen – Crush On You
Gavin DeGraw – Crush
and Animotion – Obsession (as relating to the theme)
(And Roxette has a song called Crush On You… which I don’t remember but likely doesn’t count as sufficiently good)
One Line Drawing – Crush on Everyone, The Donnas – You’ve Got a Crush On Me, Planes Mistaken For Stars – 66 Crush
File Under “Unrequited Love/Obsession”: Eels – Jeannie’s Diary, Sebadoh – Willing To Wait, Killing Joke – Teen Angst Unrequited Love Song
(I’m guessing an element of love is required here, so a song like Pursuit of Happiness’ Ashamed of Myself wouldn’t fit. It’s about “the loneliness of desire,” lust and shame. He wants to say “I love you,” but he doesn’t know her, and can’t say “I lust you,” so he says nothing).
An Aussie? Jamison Young “Crush”,
Kool Keith “Dont Crush It”, Map of Wyoming “Crusher”, Brian Jonestown Massacre “Crushed”, New Bomb Turks “Tail Crush”, and We Ragazzi “New Crush To Live For”.
It was easier to find songs about “crush” without it being in the title. Easy ones like “You Dont Know Me”–my favorite version is Van Morrison’s. “Arlene” by the Handsome Family is a crush gone mad. “Fit But Dont You Know It” by the Streets. “Digging Your Scene” by the Blow Monkeys. “You Got Me Wide Open” by Bootsy Collins. “Do You See My Love For You Growing” by the Dirtbombs.
“Cant Seem To Make You Mine” by The Seeds.
“You’ve Really Got A Hold On Me”–my favorite version being Smokey Robinson and the Miracles’.
Look for it (and others) in the mail.
I forgot to add a couple of the best tracks…..”Shes So Tough” by Mink DeVille, “Really That Bad” by The Pipettes. “Elenore” by The Turtles, “Sneaky Feelings” by Elvis Costello and “Hello Hello” by Claudine Longet. “Married Girl” by the Slackers.
I’ll send you the original later.
too much joy, “crush story”
frank sinatra (at least three times), ella fitgerald, lots of others, “i’ve got a crush on you”
They Might Be Giants – Sleeping in the Flowers (includes the word “crush”), Aqualung – Strange and Beautiful (does not), Material Issue – Kim the Waitress (also does not)
and of course there’s the BMX Bandits lovely “Kylie’s Got A Crush On Us”.
“I Want You to Want Me” by Cheap Trick
Doesn’t have the word, but it’s perfect.
teenage fanclub’s Clydesmen recording of Kylie’s got a crush on us is here
Did anyone mention “Crush Story” by Too Much Joy? i’ll send it to ya
oops, never mind…it’s 3 comments above mine…i’m a loser.
Someone posted a link to this page on my blog – it’s a place where people can write about their crushes.

Oh, and for a crush song, I really like Jim Guthrie’s “3a.m.” from his Morning, Noon and Night disk. I’m not sure if it is available on his website. (jimguthrie.org)
And “Thirteen” by Big Star. Which may actually be more of a “first love” kinda song, but it’s just so great I wanted to mention it.
There’s Carolyn Dawn Johnson’s song “Complicated.” No, it is not the same as the Avril Lavigne song. But speaking of Avril, another good crush song is “Things I’ll Never Say.”
I stumbled on this thread looking for good crush songs, since I’m stuck listening to the same two over and over again – I’ll throw them out there in case anyone else comes along looking for the same:
Beat Happening – Bewitched
All Girl Summer Fun Band – It’s There
(both include the phrase “I’ve got a crush on you”!)
