Bright Black Morning Light

Bright Black Morning Light are going to be huge in a Bonnie Prince Billy and Devendra Banhart kinda way. They’ve been signed to Matador, and have worked with Paul Oldham. They are a duo consisting of Nathan Shineywater and Rachel Hughes. They are both originally from rural Alabama but now live in tents and a communal cabin in Northern California.

They describe their music making process on their website as “cooperative song work of best friends N. Shiney water and Rachel Hughes…among other good friends and herbs.” Their 2004 lp Ala.cali.tucky won rave reviews from all of the usual suspects. They are recording their new release for Matador now.

Here’s one from Ala.cali.tucky.

True Bright Blossum

PS Said the Gramaphone is continuing their guest blogger series. This time with Edward Droste of Grizzly Bear waxing poetically and fauning over early Liz Phair.
