I’ve been waiting for this Elliott Brood record to arrive in the mail for a couple of week. Yesterday the mailman delivered. Ellioot Brood is the name of the trio led by Canadian singer/songwriter Steve Pitken. Their new record is the wonderfully packaged cd Ambassador on Six Shooter Records.
From what I’d read and heard of the band I expected a record similar to last years alt-country masterpiece Jimsom Weed by Nathan or maybe something resembling the california inspired country rock of Ox (both Canadian bands). Instead what I’ve got is a stranger and altogether more challenging and in some ways a more exciting record.
I don’t have a handle on it yet but I did want to share it with you asap. The vocals on nearly every song are distorted or contorted in one way or another (either naturally by the singer or artificially in the studio). The music swings from being guitar driven trio rock (“will”) to satanic banjo swamp blues (“President 35″). The label compares their music to a dust storm raging outside and I think that’s partly right. The band calls it Death Country. Buy it here soon.
Bonus song from Elliott Brood debut ep (buy it here)
If anybody hasn’t checked out Elliot Brood yet, give them a listen as soon as possible. Totally awesome & original stuff; both their albums are fantastic.
Hey from what I’ve read they are also labeled as Black Grass. On a Side note I think Steve is their drummer see http://www.weeweerk.com for more info.
I quite like the hard driving tempo of the song President 35. Can’t wait to hear more.
Thanks for the info and the listen.

Got an advance copy of the Album! It’s amazing! ‘The Bridge’ is my favourite song on the album!
The Dogfather
can’t believe how great they are. It is amazing how long I have waited to hear a NEW, GOOD band. Don’t let the label “death country” throw you off….I hate country, and they are great!
first day i found these guys, i listened to every song a dozen times each. haha, how the fuck can you write such good music with consistency.
right on.
