Chris Mills is living the dream (Ernest Jennings/Powerless Pop, Oct 4)

I wrote about Chris Mills‘ highly anticpated new record The Wall To Wall Sessions about three weeks ago here. At the time his new label, Ernest Jenning Record Co had released one mp3 on their website in advance of the street date. Now that the release date has come and gone I wanted to remind you all of this timeless pop record.

Sounding like a looser and powerpop version of the improbable combination of Wilco playing Woody Gutherie tunes as sung by Billy Bragg (hey that really happened, how cool is that!), Chris Mills’ over-produced (in a good way), symphonic pop Wall To Wall Sessions is a rare thing in today’s low budget, fiscally responsible, let’s go lofi and save a bunch of money and call it art, music world. There are ten songs on this disc and it’s virtually impossible to pick another one to share. You can now buy the disc through Chris Mills’ site here.

You Are My Favorite Song

Here’s the song that’s available through Ernest Jennings, it may have one of the best opening stanzas in the history of pop music:

“Oh I dreamed I was Richard Prior running on fire down the Sunset Strip
As the flames burned higher my head grew lighter
And I watched the flesh fall from my fingertips.
Ashes to ashes, trust to dust. I don’t know what it means
to be burned by something that you loved so much.
I think that I must living the dream, I think that I am living the dream.”

I found this song on Pandora.com, a free site that introduces one to new music. After Hurricane Katrina I moved to Washington, DC…this song made my heart slow its pace and allowed it to transcend to an unknown era. Thanks Chris, you saved me.
