Shriekback had a record back in the 80’s called Big Night Music; it was night music in the sense of things going bump in the night. It reverberated and steamed like it was set in some primordial jungle. I would call the new record from Kieran McMahon Small Night Music. Like the music by Duncan Sheik, David Sylvian and Brian Eno this is music for a quiet night at home, it’s a lot safer then that Shriekback but is also more enjoyable on a lot of levels.
Kieran McMahon’s debut disc, Falling Deeper Under A Spell, is out in early October on the German label Lassomusic but is widely available through Glitterhouse Records and Soulfood. As I said above the whole record has a lushness about it that is perfect for a late night listening session. Email here to order – info@catandriver.com.
