My first impression of the English folk singer Martha Tilston (here) was that she was a rather straightforward singer with a beautiful voice and wonderful songs. I’m surprised to learn that she is more radical and revolutionary than I knew.
Her new record is called Ropeswing and was recorded in the woods, live in churches and at a cottage in Somerset. It’s being given away at this site as a free download and addresses issues like the war, the inhumanity of large corporations, getting high (on what I’m not quite sure – it seems life and music), feeling small and the encroachment of suburbia on the country.

Bonus: Here’s the song I wrote about a year ago. It comes off Martha’s proper debut record Bimbling. I’m not going to lie it’s achingly beautiful.
Craig- I continue to marvel at both the quality and the quantity of music you present. It’s overwhelming, and not strictly in a good sense. With so much great music in play, I’m concerned that most of these artists will be lost or overlooked. Of course, that’s not Songs: Illinois’ fault, but still…
sometimes I think the same thing but what am I going to do…write another post about sufjan/hotchip/gnarls et al. sometimes these artsits get picked up by other bloggers and a degree of success but you’re right it is overwhelming. I could post less but I have so many great things to write about!
