My Chicago Underground Pt.1 – Can.Ky.Ree (plus High Hawk)

(Editor’s note: I typically don’t write about music from Illinois, let alone Chicago, but all this week I’ll be featuring some of the best music Chicago has to offer.)

Can.Ky.Ree is a Chicago band that I’ve never gotten around to writing about although I tried to about 6 months ago. At the time the band had no new music to promote and I kind of lost touch. But the band has just posted a new song to MySpace and it’s a devilish little waltz. This band practically lives at The Hideout and their live show is reportedly a bawdy drunken time.

As you can see from the photo collage, the band uses a wide array of instruments including violin, accordian, guitar, reeds of all sorts, melodica, piano and upright bass. The new song “The Last Free Waltz” is a gothic tale of the last dance before death. So it’s both upbeat and full of remorse.

The Last Free Waltz

High Hawk takes the mariachi horns of Theater Fire and the soaring vocals of Jeff Buckely and adds flourishes of americana roots music of all kinds on their unreleased next record. This Chicago quintet is friends with the excellent Chicago band Palliard and is loved by everyone from XRT to local indie rock stalwart WLUW. This song is new and will probably appear on an as yet unreleased debut full-length.

Chicago does indeed have a lot of good music these days. My friend David and his (one man) band The Haywards have been operating out of Chicago for over a year now. I think you’ll like his stuff.

    Hi Craig,

I’m digging the Chicago focus too. I’m up in Libertyville, and always trying to expand my Chicago-based music library. You’ve been a big help.

Following the Palliard link, I noticed their show this Saturday at the Hideout lists High Hawk opening, and that it is to be High Hawk’s last show…too bad…and odd since they have yet to release their debut. What’s up with that?
