Chris Bathgate’s "Throatsleep" (Quite Scientific, Feb. 23)

Those that have heard Chris Bathgate’s new cd, Thoatsleep, have been effusive with praise, admittedly though that’s been a very small group of people. As one fan of Chris’ laments on his Myspace page and I paraphrase: “how is it that Throtsleep has had multiple international reviews but not one yet in the states, let alone in Ann Arbor?” I first wrote about Chis here, when I was on a bit of a Ypsi/Ann Arbor jag.
It seems that this situation is likely to change in March when the Michigan label Quite Scientific gives Throatsleep its first wide scale release. Here’s two songs from Throatsleep courtesy of Promonet. “Buffalo Girl” is the alt-folksy kinda of thing I expect from Chris while “I Know How You Are Going To Die Tonight” surprises with it’s full production and jaunty, gothic-cabaret sound.
Buffalo Girl
I Know How You Are Going To Die Tonight
P.S. I’m off for vacation and will return Monday March 12. At that time, if all goes well, we’ll have an extensive SxSW feature that will run all week on both Songs:Illinois and Swedesplease. The content is a secret and a surprise but it’s very exciting, so please come back on the 12th.

I didn’t care too much for Buffalo Girl, but I Know How You Are Going To Die Tonight was awesome. Not really that cabaret though, since it’s all down to that piano. Still awesome, though…

Thanks for the paraphrase. Bathgate’s so fucking talented.
Also highly worthy of checking-out from MI, if you’d like to delve further into that recently-blossming indie/folk/pop/rock scene:
Matt Jones
Great Lakes Myth Society
The Mighty Narwhale
Misty Lyn
Jim Roll
And there’s oh-so-much more if you venture further in the directions of either pop or rock, too.

Chris Bathgate is one of my favorite upcoming artists working today. Throatsleep is definitely worth the purchase, as are his other two albums, though I’m not sure if they’re still available. He has an incredible track on Yer Bird Records compilation album, Folk Music For the End of the World. The album should be available to order by Thursday next week at http://www.yerbird.com. There’s a streaming clip of the song up on the site already!
