Bad ideas, half truths and … (Eleni Mandell, Uzhttp:i and Ari, The Hogtown Syncopators, Louis, Broken Family Band, Twilight Hotel, The Mohawk Lodge)

I have about ten posts that are half written that I fear I’ll never finish. So here they are in their infancy, unedited and clearly not ready for primetime:

I was hoping to write about Eleni Mandell. From everything I’d heard she’d be right up my ally (I feared perhaps a little too produced and also too L.A.) but I find her song “Girls” to be just the right blend of AAA smooth and Tom Waits cool. Nels Cline (Wilco) guests on the new record, Miracle of Five) which was produced by Andy Kaulkin. Expect this song soon on Grey’s Anatomy (perhaps as McDreamy’s theme). Out Feb. 6 on the Canadian label Zedtone Records.

I don’t know anything about a Uzi and Ari (Own Records)(here on myspace) except that they’re from the southwest and are popular in Europe. Their music is a mellow blend of electronic pop and experimental soundscapes. The new record is called It Is Freezing Out and is available on Luxemborg’s Own Records.

I’ve been in a string band/jug band kinda mood lately. Here’s The Hogtown Syncopators

Louis is the new solo project from former member of Remy Zero which may mean he’ll have to fight twixce as hard to live down to that band’s reputation. The title track from his new record, Freakshow Revenge, on Superphonic Records

Totally unrelated but I like Broken Family Band out of the UK. They’ll be releasing a single at the end of february on Track and Field that will be sung by Eddi Reader. Theri 2006 rrecord Balls was a chang of direction for them so let’s see what 2007 brings.

The noisy “I’m Thirsty”

In the mp3 blogging universe it’s already too late to be writing about releases that came out in January of 2007 (in fact you’re downright behind the times if you’re not on leaked May releases). I get caught up in the game as much as anyone so it’ll come as a shocker that Twilight Hotel’s acclaimed americana release Bethune came out originally in January of 2006.

A release this strong has legs though.

Milton Mapes has a side project in the works for summer of 2007. They’re called Monahan.

The Mohawk Lodge’s bio on the White Whale records site namedrops The Boss, The Constantines, Smog and Fleetwood Mac. That’s quite a range of influences and stylistic pairings. The band’s new record Wildfire is due out some time this winter. Guests on the new record include band members from Great Aunt Ida, Wolf Parade and Ghost House.

“Wear Em Out” is a song that is a good example of the bands purported shift from campfire songs to little indie rock gems.

I’ve become somewhat obsessed with Eleni Mandell recently. I reviewed Country for True Lovers and Miracle of Five, and have a CD giveaway contest going on for the latter. And I still have two of her earlier albums to review.
