"Simply Spaulding Gray" by Steve Forbert

It was a little embarrassing discovering Steve Forbert in 1988. Imagine my surprise when I learned that Steve Forbert was one of the most acclaimed singer songwriters of his generation. His debut solo record (which I’ve since tracked down) is one of the truly great American records of the last century.

As his voice gets older, wiser, deeper and gruffer, and his writing gets more introspective I think Steve Forbert’s only getting better. “Simply Spaulding Gray” is a song that tries to come to grip with an artist whose demons couldn’t be tamed. Preorder Strange Names and New Sensations here.
