Even in the unassuming realms of alt-country and americana you don’t find many bands that use a lofi approach. The majority of bands that are outside of the Nashville establishment still are under the belief that production values matter. The Juanita Family either don’t have that same ethos or are so rough hewn and hard scrabble that they simply haven’t mastered those production techniques. But for me the sound of The Juantia Family is pure country.

We interrupt this normally stodgy and quite cheap blog with an exciting announcement. We have a contest. That’s right you can win stuff. Loose Music is back with the fifth in it’s series of Americana leaning compilations and this time they’ve put together a doozy that features all women performers. I’m proud to say some of these artists were exposed to the label through this very site.
So the deal is I have 5 copies of Country Girl (New Sounds Of The old West Vol. 5) to give away to the 26-30 caller, email me here at cbonnell@gmail.com for your chance to win, and if the phones are busy keep trying back (I recommend re-dial).
The lineup for this compilation is a “real country” music fan’s dream, like they say on their site this is not the Nashvegas version of country but the “dirt-under-the-fingernails” version. Artists include Devon Sproule, Laura Gibson, Jaimi Shuey, and Lana Rebel (lead singer from The Juanita Family). Pre-order Country Girl here. Of course since this is an mp3 blog, here’s a track from the record. Anna Egge’s “Apple Tree”:

We’re only a quarter of the way there on the contest so keep the emails coming. I’ll leave a comment here when we’ve got our 5 winners.
