There’s an interesting singer-songwriter scene in LA that’s centered around the nightclub Hotel Cafe. The scene’s been dubbed “wimpycore” by one of it’s main practitioners; a guy going by the moniker Buddy. The music ain’t all bad, it’s just that it’s harmless and cute. I think of comparable artists like Jude (who I loved), Jack Johnson and Pete Yorn (he’s on the rockier end of the spectrum). Back to Buddy. His songs have just been featured in Grey’s Anatomy and The Ghost Whisperer (is that still on?!) and while they follow the overly-sensitive yet hot-on-the-LA-scene style of all the other “wimpycore” artists out there, I sense a little more depth and emotional resonance to the songs I’ve heard on his debut Alterations and Repairs.
Here’s “Westgate” expect to hear it in a Honda/Ford/GM commercial soon. Buddy will be playing a record release party at, where else, but Hotel Cafe on November 30.

On an unrelated note (these two guys would never be confused with “wimpycore”) David Dondero and Richard Buckner are playing Beat Kitchen in Chicago tomorrow night (Nov. 9). I wrote up the show and linked to a couple songs by David Dondero over at Transmission. Check it out.

Also, and even more unrelated, Swedesplease has an exclusive first listen to a new song of Blood Music’s forthcoming release Don Quite. Check it out here, the song’s called “Eagles In The Water”.
