I miss Chicago, especially Schubas, Martyrs, The Abbey Pub, Double Door and Metro, Thankfully, L.A. has a cool scene (Hotel Cafe, Crane’s, The Mint and Room 5) that has given rise to some incredible artists who are taking the national stage – or are destined for it. I’ve seen Sara Melson at Hotel and Crane’s a few times, and am thrilled to hear she’s signed to a good label (Nettwerk recently signed Felix da Housecat and Ladytron, so they’re on a roll). I have both of Sara’s self-released EP’s. “Happy Endings” is my favorite song of hers, an epic, sweeping song deserving of a pivotal scene in a dark, romantic movie. “Lay You Down” has a lonely, killer guitar line. Sara’s EPs rank up there with Neko Case’s Blacklisted and Liz Phair’s Exile among my most-played and cherished discs. As Sara gains a much-deserved national audience, I hope my other fave artists from here follow suit (Brooke White, Amilia K. Spicer, Keaton Simons, Lissie, Gabriel Mann….)
