Crooked Still – “Still Crooked” (Signature Sounds, June 24)

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

I’ve been writing so much about this new string band renaissance I think I’m just about out of words to describe the music on Still Crooked the new record from Crooked Still out on Signature Sounds out on June 24.

On the song “Pharoah” the band mines a slightly gothic, darker sound to accompany the ghostly vocals (and subject matter) of lead singer Aoife O’Donovan. Pre-order this record now here through Amazon.

Enough said! Well no not really. I’ll add that I find Chris’ work to be as good if not better than contemporaries like Chris Garneau, Sufjan Stevens, Jose Gonzalez, Bon Iver, etc. etc.

Ayla Brooks “After The Morning After” (Saved By Radio, June 24)

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

Figures Hero Hill beat me to Ayla Brooks. A.) The band’s from Canada (as is Hero Hill) so he’s a leg up for that reason. B.) The band plays the kind of roots rock that Hero Hill love’s (as do I!). Still, it’s not like the blogosphere is on fire with news of this ex-AA Sound System member’s debut solo record. In fact Hero Hill had the only post and that was back in March. The new record comes out June 24 on Saved By Radio.

It’s an interesting release. Imagine the Stones without Charlie Watts and you’ll at least get an inkling for the sound of the record. That’s because it was recorded sans drums in a one room studio (a farm really) with all the musicians playing together and no drums, at least not a traditional drumset (there are handclaps and footstomps aplenty though).

Anyway here’s a song Hero Hill didn’t post. It’s called “After The Morning After” and is from the record of the same name. Buy it here come June 24.

P.S. I just added a great new song by Ed Greene over on Swedesplease. It’s called “Fuck It” and may very well be my new theme song.
