Fan of the Tarbox band? You bet! And I am indeed sorry Kellar and Sciascia migrated, but hey, the paydays are probably bigger and more frequent with Jewell, and I am 100% in favor of musicians making money.

Does "more snap" = "better"? Not sure. All in the ears, right? I like "more snap" in my alt gospel, some will dig the pretty.

As for my point/tone, let's see what the album track list looks like. If more than a few obscure/trad. songs are shared with old Ramblers repertory, I'm prepared to make a case that someone is sliding by on the vision and work of someone else.

Uhm, not to make too big a deal of it, but not only did Johnny Sciascia (bass) and Dan Kellar (fiddle) play in Michael Tarbox's band, but "12 Gates" used to be one of their signature numbers together, done with a lot more snap than what's on display here.

If you have a chance to see the Tarbox Ramblers on tour this summer, you should go.
