Ugh!! Triple A Radio. What A Load Of Crap!!

Radio is so messed up. I looked at a recent playlist/airpla¬• chart at one of the AAA radio behomoths (KGSR in Austin) and it’s full of boring crap. The web is so the place to be right now. Here’s their list; how unimaginative and corporate friendly can they be (and yes they threw a bone to Michael Fracasso and Bob Schneider but they’re local and that’s that):

SANTANA – She’s Not There
NICKEL CREEK – Reasons Why
DAVE MATTHEWS BAND – Where Are You Going
AMOS LEE – Listen
R.E.M. – Radio Free Europe
MY MORNING JACKET I’m Amazed
BOB DYLAN – I Threw It All Away
MICHAEL FRACASSO – Naked Fool
LOS LOBOS – Can’t Stop The Rain
ADELE – Chasing Pavements
JAMES HUNTER – Don’t Do Me No Favours
DAVID BOWIE – Rebel Rebel
WILLIE NELSON w/ NORAH JONES – Lonestar
DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE – I Will Possess Your Heart
NIRVANA – Come As You Are
STEVIE RAY VAUGHN AND DOUBLE TROUBLE – Ain’t Gone ‘n Give Up On Love
BOB SCHNEIDER – When The Sun Breaks Down On
JORMA KAUKONEN – I Am the Light of this World
EDDIE VEDDER – Hard Sun
COLDPLAY – Viva La Vida
FLEETWOOD MAC – Never Going Back Again
LOS LONELY BOYS Staying With Me
U2 – Walk On

P.S. I’m pretty buzzed on a good Merlot so just ignore this post…please.

… sad thing is that many people would give a lot to have radio this good in their area. Compared to 95% of what else you'll find on the dial, this is gold. True, it's one-dimensional and big-label-centric. But almost any terrestrial station that doesn't go that way won't be able to remain on the air. Anymore, 'community radio' is typically the only place on the dial where you'll find programmers knowledgeable and passionate enough to break this chain. Pledge early and often, folks.

In full disclosure, feel free to peruse a couple recent playlists from a weekly show I do (routesandbranches.blogspot.com).

Sadly uninspired website, but you should've seen the last one …

  3. WYPN in Philly went the same way but it drove me to the blogs …. so not all bad now that I think of it …

More Merlot might not be the all bad …

Perhaps the funniest thing about KGSR is they describe themselves as community radio, they are not “public radio,” and you'll know this the first time a 10-minute commercial break comes your way.

And all good folks in Austin know that fine music comes out of KUT 90.5

Came here to say what Scott said. I live in Dallas, and besides the Range, which is fuzzy sounding where I live, Radio is a wasteland.

As lerjoy states, listen to KUT when in Austin.
