Will Kimbrough – “Wings” (Feb. 23)

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Will Kimbrough is known as a modern day musical renaissance man. He has produced, played with, written songs with and performed with all the A-listers in the americana scene and a few that are outside of that scene (namely his work with Jimmy Buffet). I’ve been into his stuff since he first surfaced as leader of Will and the Bushmen. I love his work with the band Daddy and his solo records have been consistently great.

He’s back in 2010 with a new record called Wings. There are a couple references to angels and miracles on the record. But this one that describes the three women in his life as three angels is especially nice. Pre-order Wings now through Village Records here.

Daddy – “For A Second Time” (Self-release, June 16)

Monday, June 1st, 2009

I’m only tracking a few bands on Myspace, Facebook or Twitter. I’m just not that methodical or organized to follow more. For some strange reason the band Daddy is one of these few bands. I like both Tommy Womack and Will Kimbrough as solo artists. So it’s a no brainer that I’d like Daddy which is the band that combines these two iconoclastic rock `n’ rollers. I’ve written about the band here and their solo careers here and here.

The band is pretty serious about their ReverbNation page and that’s the best place to pre-order this June 16th release (at a name your own price amount). “Early To Bed Early To Rise” is a song that puts the real world in perspective for a bunch of graduating college seniors. It’s the real world according to Tommy and Will. A world of letdowns, early mornings and the drudgery of daily life set to a rock n roll soundtrack and a steady backbeat.

There’s a bunch of new stuff that I should be telling you all about but just haven’t. I’ve neglected it in part because several other fine + worthy music blogs have been on these band’s cases since before the records came out. In each case I’ve noted where I first read/heard/learned about each release.

Safety Of A Back – Trainwreck Riders (via Hero Hill)
Still Drunk, Still Crazy, Still Blue – Scott H Birham (via Nine Bullets)
Walkin On the Devil’s Backbone – Ha Ha Tonka (via Hear Ya)

There now we’re all caught up!

{MP3} Daddy (Will Kimbrough and Tommy Womack) – “The Ballad Of Martin Luther King” (new record out June 21)

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

I’ve written about a number of americana supergroups (The Resentments, Sometymes Why etc). They’re usually comprised of individuals who are not household names in the real world, but are well respected in the world of roots music. The group called Daddy comprised of Will Kimbrough and Tommy Womack, is another such band. They have a new record coming out June 21 that as of yet remains untitled. It’ll be their first studio release since it follows up the 2005 live release At The Women’s Club.

These two first teamed up in a band called bis-quits that recorded for John Prine’s Oh Boy Records. They’ve both had successful solo careers by combining their guitar prowess with songwriting and producing. Here they cover a song called “The Ballad Of Martin Luther King” that they play straight up, the song is a little too obvious for my tastes, but the guitar tones and harmonica are right on. The new record comes out fittingly on Father’s day 2009 (June 21). Keep and eye out for it. And catch them live at SXSW March 19 at Mother Egan’s.
